Shaping Atmosphere Through Sound – My Work as a Musical Director on RESSOURCES
Over the past weeks, I’ve been working as part of the three-person artistic direction team and as musical director and sound designer for RESSOURCES — a new interdisciplinary contemporary circus and performance production developed at Open Space Bochum.
The project brings together five artists from different disciplines — urban dance, contemporary dance, hand balancing, aerial circus and juggling — to explore the idea of what Happens to our ressources in encounters with other individuals. Rather than telling a linear story, Ressources creates an immersive environment where movement, sound, objects and interaction constantly influence each other.
For me as a sound designer, this project is especially exciting because the sound is not simply accompanying the performance — it actively shapes the dramaturgy. My role sits somewhere between composition, live musical direction and atmospheric world-building. Together with the directing team, I’m developing the overall artistic language of the piece while also creating the sonic structure that connects the different scenes and emotional states.
The current version of the piece takes place inside a closed, immersive setting. That atmosphere heavily influences my sound approach. I’m working with layered electronic textures, processed ambient recordings, rhythmic repetition and evolving sonic spaces that can move from intimate and fragile to dense and overwhelming within seconds.
What interests me most in projects like this is the possibility of sound functioning as an invisible architecture: guiding perception, manipulating tension, creating emotional memory and shaping how audiences physically experience a space.
Ressources will premiere on June 13th at Flottmann-Hallen-Herbe. After a very successful first work-in-progress showing, we are currently preparing the final production and looking toward future performances.
Projects like this are exactly what KARAMBO-SOUND is aiming for — to develop immersive sonic experiences that move beyond traditional music production and become an active part of spatial and emotional storytelling.
